Universal Health Care

What this country needs, according to many, is universal health care.  Just be careful what you wish for – Japan’s got universal health insurance too.  If you can’t afford it, the government takes it over, leading to what is often considered one of the best health systems in the world.

Unless you need emergency care.

14 hospitals, eh?  I know a lot of towns that don’t *have* that many….

We here in the UK have universal healthcare. It has it’s problems which is obvious, but we consider it a national treasure.

While I’ve heard from folks in England who think it’s a disaster in the making.

However, those are mostly all the folks I’ve heard from – I’d be glad to hear what you think its strong points are, and where you think the problems come in. I hear a lot about the issues, and very few arguments saying they’re worth it besides “but everybody gets health care, that’s good, so it doesn’t matter.”

What makes you think it’s worth the issues? What about the ‘brain drain’ effect, whereby more of the top doctors would rather go to a place where they can earn a higher-than-average salary thanks to the free market, rather than government-mandated payment rates? And what about the high tax levels required to support it?
